Help Desire is screwed///

Newbie
Hi, It's been a while since I was last here, almost a year of trouble free ownership of my Desire.
Until today:mad:
I noticed over the last few weeks it was getting sluggish and hanging quite a bit. Not the same fast operation I was used too. So decided to take out the microSD card with all my mp3 and pics on.
I carried out a hard reset and restarted the phone.
Since this I am unable to connect via usb to the laptop. the device only charges. Does this even with microSD card inserted.
The worst thing is the device will no longer turn "wi-fi" on.
I go to wireless & networks click the wi-fi checkbox and it says turning on.......then "ERROR"
in Wi-Fi settings the add wi-fi network is greyed out as is network notification.
This more or less renders this phone useless to me as i use the phone predominately on the wi-fi at home.
I have had the phone a year this month so I guess a warranty claim is out of the question now, so maybe a big repair fee
The handet is from Vodafone on a 2 year contact. Think it is unbranded as there is no vodafone markings on the case
Any ideas warmly recieved as I will try anything to get it working
Also I scanned the net just before posting here to see if anybody had any clues, and one site mentioned water damage indicators. As the phone may have been in water, but mine hasn't it spends its time in a protective case and is looked after
what are these indicators
No water damage, indicators show this on the battery and inside by where the battery is.
Also the handset is not detecting the microSD card, have tried two different cards and no joy.
usb connection only charges, despite choosing an option to tether, drive, sync or charge.
really having no joy getting it to work now... can anybody help
many thanks in advance
steve

I take it you're not rooted, or on a custom ROM?

Sounds like hardware problems, but I really don't know. You've tried another reset, right?

Hi, thanks for the reply.
Re-setted (both hard & soft) about 20 times now.
Managed to get the microSD card to mount but that was it, phone said preparing sd card with an exclamation mark next to the icon at the top.
So I formated both my microSD cards and I need to get a microSD adaptor today so I can get something off the net to put on the card to put in the phone to make it work.
What do I need to get is it an original ROM or something that I need to get on the card then put it in the phone and turn it on
is he phone missing some software or something?

Whats the software version in Settings>about phone?

Its also still under warranty just FYI

Took it to the Vodafone shop in Bristol today and the guy there took a look at it. Says it looks like water damaged (it isn't) even when the indicators are not changed.
Looks like the chip in the WiFi is broken somehow, and it's still under warranty for the duration of the contract which I didnt know.
They say be careful because they may start to take it apart and say it's water damaged (it isn't) and wont fix it and send it back in a worse state than it went in, in because they have to stop the process as soon as they think that it is.
Anybody had this happen
Also I picked odd the Void sticker on the screw, didnt know what it was at the time
Will this be a problem if they send it away?
I see you can get a replacement Void sticker on ebay

Fixed it, don't know how, or how long it will be before it goes again. Just had the back off it with all the cards + battery out. gave the internal survaces a gentle wipe with some medical alcolhol wipes. and put it back together and tried it, not expecting it to work then it did, it just started looking for wifi networks and found my home one and i put in the password, now it works//
thankgod

Got it working again after a faff, but took a lot of resetting and on/off try again action. god knows whats up with it

Good hearing it's back in working order! At least kind of ;-)

Really sounds like the hardware is failing, though...
