Help Desire S auto restarting

hey guys.. im posting this on behalf of my friend.. her desire S apparently randomly auto restarts.. it happens once or twice a day on average..

it doesnt seem to be a heating problem, as the phone does not get hot when it restarts.. it heats up a bit during heavy gaming etc but nothing abnormal, it doesnt restart during this period..

unfortunately i cant give u any more detail as i dont use it. phone is not rooted :) i noticed some similar threads on the Desire forum but i thought i'd post this here as this phone is newer n shouldve fixed any problems with the old desire :)

If this began only after 3rd party apps had been downloaded to the phone, then it could be one or more of them causing the problem. It's impossible to say what it is without knowing what apps/widgets are on the phone.

Not all apps on Android Market (or elsewhere) are fully compatible with the Desire S. Some may appear to work, but may not be 100% stable.

The first and easiest thing to try is a soft reset - remove the battery for a couple of minutes.

If she is using a particular 3rd party app at the time it crashes, then that should be uninstalled to see if it's that which is causing the problem.

Some 3rd party apps like those offering new UIs (User Interfaces) or that are going to be on all the time (or in the background) are usually the first suspects. So have a look to see if your friend is running any of those, and if so, try uninstalling them to see if it makes a difference.

Clearing the cache on the phone may help. There are cache cleaners you can download from Android Market. You may also want to have a look at the system process on the phone to see if any apps are causing a crash by using up too much CPU or memory. Again, there are several apps on Android Market which monitor the phone's system.

If you don't get anywhere with the above, and without knowing what the precise cause is, you're probably left with either removing all 3rd party apps or/and doing a factory reset. You'll lose all your data with a factory reset, so you'll need to make sure you've backed up everything you don't want to lose.

Once you have the phone back to its original out-of-the-box state (although this won't be true if you manually remove all the apps that have been downloaded, which is why a factory reset is going to the best option), it should be easier to find out what's making the phone crash when you start adding apps - a few each day.

hey thanks a lot for the detailed reply! i also asked her if any particular app seems to cause it, no go. but u mention apps with new UIs.. i recommended CircleLauncher, which is always running as a widget.. i'll tell her to remove this one to see if it does anything.. that, and a soft reset. a hard reset n reinstalling apps a few at a time is gonna be a bit of work, i hope one of the other solutions work! thanks again! :)

i am having this issue too. have you found any solution? i am also trying uninstalling app one by one but still trying.
pls let share if anyone have a solution.

Hi,

I got my Desire S 3 days ago and on the second day started having this problem. It doesn't happen when I'm doing anything in particular- one time it was in the middle of the night when I was sleeping, another time when I was in the middle of typing a text message and then other times just randomly when it's sitting idle not doing anything at all. I've only downloaded a few apps so far and as far as I know none are running all the time.

I've read about a similar problem with the new HTC Sensation- the consensus seems to be that there is an existing software problem and that an update is needed. Having said that, I've read a few people saying they've taken their handsets back and exchanged them, sometimes up to 3 or 4 times, but then they have found one that doesn't do this.

Would really like to know what's going on as I think the Desire S is a great phone but if this is going to keep happening I want to know so I can take it back whilst it's still new enough! Aaargh!

I've had 3 handsets already, all with the same re-booting problem. I am currently waiting for my NEW handset to arrive,HTC picked up my last faulty handset on 7th Sept, so I've only been 3 weeks without my piece of crap. The service is shite as well as the phone, it's not fit for the purpose. I sent an official complaint and someone from customer care telephoned me. I requested a different handset, to which they agreed, but they had to check which ones they had in stock. The guy phoned me back, and guess what, the only new phones they had was a Desire S (what's the chances of that !), so currently waiting for another piece of crap to arrive and go faulty in less that 3 weeks !!! I have read of other models, Desire HD and Sensation both having the same faults, so maybe all their handsets are crap, can't wait for my contract to be up so I can get a different make.

ufff, this has recently started happening to my girlfriend's Desire S as well, again with no apparent trigger - yesterday it restarted itself when it was just in her handbag. Will keep an eye on running processes to try and nail it, although reading this forum and XDA it seems this is a relatively common problem that iisn't at all understood. Great.
