Help Desire screen dead?

WC_EEND

Lurker
The main reason because I'm posting this is because I'm confused. Somewhere along the course of this day, my Desire switched itself off. When I tried to boot it up again the default HTC boot screen showed up, but turned green-ish for a few minutes, then became normal again, and then showed the default Cyanogenmod 7 loading screen. only it ran very slowly, and the screen did not respond. So, I went into the HBOOT screen, and saw Touch-panel FAIL there.
After a few tries, I managed to boot into recovery and recover to my default Desire ROM. It can boot, only very slowly and after a seconds to a few minutes, the screen becomes irresponsive again.

My phone is rooted and still under the 2 year manufacturer warranty. Will they replace it when it's rooted or does that require an unroot?
Also, the shop where I bought has this stupid policy of taking 5 weeks to replace anything. So I'd like to avoid having to hand it in for replacement.

Thanks for your help

Edit: I also discovered that it says it won't charge when plugged into the electricity, and it won't read an my SD card anymore

Edit no.2: charging and SD card work again

Edit no.3: it seems I can no longer access the HBOOT screen

Edit no.4: forgot to include a bit of info. I'm not using a task killer, I'm running the stock HTC froyo ROM, rooted. My Desire is unbranded, and my carrier is Mobistar.

Small update, Touch-panel FAIL has somehow changed to Touch-panel SYNTH0101 (whatever that means) and the screen is still unresponive sometimes. I can also access the HBOOT menu again
