Root desire wont boot

Hi Scotty, i hope you can help on this one, I have desire bravo whilst messing with it, ie;
S-OFF, ROOTING and ROM etc, everything worked fine!
Then a few days later i started having boot problems, i resorted to flashing hboot from Alpharev and also tried a couple of different stock RUU but to no avail!

I know from searching and reading up on this site the phone is not bricked, just needs the right help and know how!

When i boot up i get a black screen with HTC in the middle and a triangle in each corner with exclamation mark and thats it.

I tried using HTCdevs 2.3 upgrade but when the utility gets to 68% it fails and gives error 152 cannot update image!
I also tried Bortaks guide and used section 5 (S-OFF) RUU problems but unfortunately nothing happening.
So at the moment i have a desire bravo with the above mentioned problem.

I would really appreciate it if you could help out!

Many thanks

MAT.

ive got to get to work, ill see what i can do later on this evening.

in the mean time, ive moved your pose to the desire ATR forum,so that more folks will see it.

at first glance, you appear to be stuck in ruu mode, and may just need to find the correct utility to update.

you can try fastboot reboot-bootloader in cmd,and see if that takes you back to fastboot.

you also might do a fastboot oem ? (make sure you get the "?" in the command ;))in cmd and post that output here,so we know what commands are available to you

last and not least,do fastboot getvar all in cmd,and post that output as well :)

Thanks Scotty, i'm not a well versed android man, just a very newbie so what you have mentioned in your reply is all very, very new to me!
Please accept my apology you might have to spell it out to me! and i await your return message with anticipation.

Yes you are right i think i will need the correct RUU, the question is finding one.

Here some info about the phone which might help you;

Alpharev cm7r2
Bravo pvt1
S-OFF
Rooted
Radio 5.17.05.23

Oh, just to let you know when i tried the HTCdevs 2.3 upgrade RUU, the utility said i was upgrading from image v2.29.405.5 and the one i using to upgrade was v2.32.405.5, but sadly failed.

Cheers

MAT.

Not a problem. I will get you some more detailed directions later . So are you attempting to install the HTCdev hboot ? or are you trying to install A full, signed ruu?

As it is Scotty it's stuck in the RUU MODE, no boot, no recovery, as explained above so just to get it running again would be great.

So basically a signed stock ruu that i can easily install and the phone lets it install to get it working! or at least something that i can get into the bootloader/recovery with.

thank you.

Hi Scotty, just to update you I now have my phone up and working, Weehhhyyyy!!!

For anyone with this problem follow these instructions, worked for me! ( assuming PHONE with S=OFF!!!)

First and foremost do a lot of searching, i mean a lot of searching on your problem, there will be an answer some where!!!!!

0) Download a signed RUU or HTCdevs 2.3 upgrade RUU (rom update utility)>>>Download Alpharev downgrader .img file

1) Remove bk cover, remove battery, wait a few seconds and replace it ( make sure battery is well charged!)

2) Connect phone PC/LAPTOP you should hear the connection sound from your computer
if correct drivers are installed!

3) If your phone was S-OFF then you will need to use Alpharev downgrader image from Alpharev site.

As it is (after a lot of searching and reading) you CANNOT install RUU's with S-OFF
(by all means someone can correct me if i'm wrong!)

4) Use Android Flasher to flash the .img file

The Android Flasher will give give you ERRORS but will flash the file (again it worked for me!)

5) Run a signed RUU or HTCdevs 2.3 upgrade ( i used the latter!), follow the instructions on the upgrade utility and fingers crossed your when completed you will see a message " your rom update utility is complete"

6) Your phone will now go through the process of powering up, just wait until is completely fired up!!!!

Hope this helps others in the same situation!

Thanks again Scotty!

MAT.

The problem wasn't that you were S-Off, it was that you were using the CM7 HBOOT.

The various custom hboots from alpharev repartition your internal storage, to give you more usable space. So whereas the standard HTC partitions are 250 MB /system, 40 MB /cache and 147 MB /data (/data being your internal storage), the CM7r2 hboot gives you 145 MB /system, 5 MB /cache and 287 MB /data - a worthwhile increase :)

The catch is that if you try to install a stock HTC ROM by running an RUU, the ROM cannot be installed because the system partition is too small for the HTC ROM! That's why you were getting stuck.

So there are two solutions: if you want to go completely to stock, including back to S-On, flash the downgrader hboot first. If you want to run the RUU for any reason but wish to remain S-Off, flash the alpharev bravo stock hboot before running the RUU. This one gives you the same partitions as the HTC stock, so the HTC ROM will fit, but is still S-Off.

Note that if you use the HTCDev RUU you won't be able to use Revolutionary to return the phone to S-Off. I would seriously recommend anyone who needs to run an RUU to use the official Android 2.3 upgrade instead (sometimes available from HTCDev, always available from shipped-ROMs), as this also runs on GSM Desires bought from many different networks, but you can still get S-Off afterwards.

Sorry not to have been able to tell you this earlier - I knew the moment I read the first post what your problem was - but I'm afraid I've been in meetings solidly all day and have only just found this thread.

Sorry for the late rely,I couldn't explain it any better than above. I didn't want to make too many recmendations until wed figured out exactly where you were, and needed to be.

A more methodical approach would have been to figure out your cid and main version to make sure you had a compatible ruu before givng up your s off.

Alpharev does have a stock partition hboot that would have been a good choice if you wanted to run the stock ruu,as you could have then retained your s off make future reroot or downgrade easier.

But at any rate, glad you're sorted and back to a working device :-)

Thanks anyway for your help and i'm sure your input will be appreciated by other would be Nandroids! with similar problems.

Thanks again!

Mat.

Hi Hadron, I just got home and going through what I've done today and realised after so much searching and reading about this Alpharev, that HTC rev etc! it all got stuck in my mind with the rev thing!

I have actually installed the HTC_Desire_Android_2.3_Upgrade (161mb) RUU, so this would mean that i should be able to S-OFF and ROOT my device if i decided to go ahead with Revolutionary! am i correct?

Thanks Mat.

Edit: what is the difference between PVT4 and PVT1 if any, my phone has the PVT1.

If you used the 2.3 update then you'll be fine to run Revolutionary again. The key test is the hboot version: 1.02 is fine, 1.03 or later is not, and the 2.3 RUU comes with 1.02.

PVT1 and PVT4 are just different hardware revisions. PVT1 is the early revision: I expect you have an AMOLED screen, whereas PVT4 will be LCD. For rooting purposes, the difference is that some PVT4 handsets won't work with the old but stable recovery CWM 2.5.0.7. It's actually the "erase size" parameter that's important, but all PVT1, 2 and 3 handsets have erase size 20,000, while some PVT4 have erase size 40,000. So someone wanting to use that recovery needs to check the erase size if they are PVT4, but doesn't if they are PVT 1-3. The other recoveries mentioned in the revolutionary guide work with either.

Some PVT1 handsets have suffered motherboard overheating problems, but by no means all (mine's still going fine after almost 3 years).

I think that's about it for the significant differences.

Hi Hadron thanks for replying, I can now get into bootloader so the info is as follows:

Bravo PVT1
Ship S-ON
HBOOT: 1.02.0001
MICROP: 031d
Touch Panel: SYNT0101
Radio: 5.17.05.23
July 22 2011

May be you can make head or tail of this!

ahh that makes a little more sense. becasue you said you were using the htcdev update, i thot you were trying to install the unlock compatible hboot(alot of folks think the ruu containing the ruu is a complete ruu)

what do you need heads and tails made of? :p you are on revolutionary compatible hboot.

just remember in the future to not be so quick to jump into things when you have an issue, espeically since neither revolutionary or alpharev are giving you a "radio s-off". basically, they are giving you a "patched" hboot that ignores the radios frantic crys of still being s on,so in order to remain s off you need to make sure to try and not flash an s-on hboot if at all possible :)

Yes, it's much the same as mine. :)

The important things are that you have the most recent radio firmware (so don't ever worry about changing that), and that hboot is compatible with running Revolutionary if you want to root+S-Off again. :D

Edit: ninja'd!

Hi Hadron, just to update, I went ahead and used Revolutionary and i am now S-OFF and ROOTED again with 4ext recovery touch installed.
I selected the Runnymede AIO custom rom, everything running smoothly for now!

And yes i will in future just step back a little and think it over before jumping in the VERY deep end!!!

Thanks

MAT.
