Help detach an app from the play store? how?

Not surr i understand the vernacular here, but as the title says. More or less, increasingly annoyed because while my phone is running happily, rooted, with a custom ROM, play store keeps trying to "update" me out of my pleasant experience with YouTube Vanced, and into the "might as well BE an ad-laden virus" that is standard YouTube.

Looking through XDA, since everyone wants to ape them as gospel, everyone keeps saying "detach the app." But literally can't find any way of HOW the heck to do that. Everyone says what, but not HOW.
 
Why would you still have PlayStore on a rooted device with a custom ROM?

I always figured that the main reason to root a device was to get rid of spyware from Google and other useless bloatware.

  • Run a newer build of Android OS, to gain more granular permissions control
  • Only in Android 9 and newer, can you get PiP from YouTube and Twitch
  • My primary reason for root is more comprehensive ad blocking that doesn't require a recurring subscription to a vpn, that automatically neuters you to 2% of your normal speed
  • YouTube Vanced lets comprehensive ad blocking, customization, and a working dark/black mode for the app; not to mention resolution overrides
  • Factory ROM had Facebook as a system app. Ewwwwwww....
About the only con to Vanced, is that it's typically one build version behind when a new version of it releases. But Play Store then wants to pitch a fit and act like it wants to "upgrade me" to its God awful and broken version.

If newtube can't support that, it's not a valid solution for me. Full stop.
 
NewPipe is updated regularly via F-Droid, and I know when because the app tells me (settings available).

Dark mode is there, no ads by default, and PIP along with background player and downloading.

I don't see what the problem is, other than someone still using Google poop and trying to enjoy one's self.

I use a firewall for ad-blocking.

First, it's free- no subscription.
Second, it sends ad requests to nowhere- the requests never leave the device- so device speed is not slowed appreciably.

Right now, this is about as useful as an ASCII meme pic of the "install gentoo" guy being posted on a Windows gaming thread.

Personally, I like NoRoot because it is more simple, and has a real time log that is not behind a paywall.

From this log, I can block individual IPs globally, and basically build my own ad-blocker over time.

NetGuard is also great, and you can download any hostfile for ad-blocking.

To really get into it, you can use Tracker Control, which finds and then allows you to block or allow individual trackers for each app.

Also, it will show you where your tracking info is being sent.

What exactly is your question, then?

As far as I can tell, it is 'How can I keep using Google, while at the same time using apps that violate Google Terms Of Service- yet not constantly be pestered by Google?'

To be honest, maybe I did not phrase the answers appropriately:
Get rid of Google entirely, or use an app that Google has no control over.

It really is just that simple.

You have not shown any reason to continue using Vanced over NewPipe.

because I'm satisfied with how well Vanced works?

Vanced doesn't break ToS with anything. its controls are within the app itself.
Every stupid thread on XDA just says "detach the app". nothing says how to do so so I can get the update nags to stop. That's what I'm asking for.

Don't think I can answer your question, for one thing, what exactly is this "Youtube vanced" of which you speak?

it's literally a replacement for the stock YouTube app with a lot of extra controls. The root method of installing it even replaces the factory YouTube apk in the systerm; hence, Play Store wants to "upgrade" me to its known, awful version. The non-root version works about as well; doesn't have that problem, but requires the install of MicroG for the Google credentials stuff.

You already know how to use YouTube.

The idea that you cannot figure out the simple, unconvoluted settings (unlike the ones in YouTube and Vanced) is hard to believe.

Your problem is not with Google- it is because you are using Google.

Vanced does break the terms of service, as it allows downloading and has no ads.

This is why you cannot download anything if you are signed in.

Why not turn both the notifications and auto-update from Google PlayStore off?

Or disable/uninstall the PlayStore altogether?

Yeah, the first line of that workaround illustrates the problem: you used to be able to simply detach an app from the Play Store using Titanium Backup, but then Google changed the way the Play Store works and so apps that are detached don't stay detached. And that was maybe 7 years ago. Hence that person's workaround of running a script to keep it detached. How old are the XDA threads that say "just detach it", because search engines are great at finding obsolete information?

What surprises me is that a hack of YouTube (this "vanced") still has the original signature, and that raises the question "why"? If that's because it's needed for the app to work then the methods that change the signature could cause problems (beyond having to be done each time you update it). But I guess you could try and then reinstall if it breaks something.
 
FWIW I tried Vanced long ago before I found NewPipe.

Absolutely hated it.

Just as annoying and unintuitive as YouTube, and ecery other Google app for that matter.

TBH, NewPipe has implemented a couple of the things about YouTube that I don't like- but it is still far better than Vanced.
