Dev Options: "Desktop Backup Password"

Under Developer Options the second option is:

"Desktop backup password" which offers the ability to add one to encrypt your "desktop full backup".

So my question is:

How do you make a desktop full backup? Do you have to be rooted?

If not, I'd sure love to know how to make a desktop full backup, on a mac.

I rarely connect my phone to my computer. I think the last time was two months ago, and it was the second or third time ever. (I also don't have developer options turned on.)

However, I'll try to play with this later, and see what I can figure out...

Me either. But I'd like to have real whole device backup (restorable) w/o root. So this got me wondering.

I have dev options on so as to be able to minimize the animations -- why waste the cycles/juice is how I look at it.

I also have animations turned off on iPad 2 as it really reduces laggishness running iOS 7.

Ooops, was that ok...? To mention....;-)
