Developer needs phone to test with

SOLUTION FOUND: All of my problems were with the Virgin Mobile Chaser phone. I took it back and got an LG Optimius Elite and it worked the first time with no problems.

I'm an Android developer and I need a phone to test with. Most people think that any Android phone will work but I have been through two phone so far that won't work for testing.

I need a cheap phone that runs Gingerbread, has a reasonably slow cpu and not a lot of memory. I don't want a contract with a carrier.

The problem has been that, although my Windows 7 64bit computer can see the phones, the "Android Debugging Bridge" (ADB) cannot see them. Other developers have also had this problem with the same two phones.

So, does anyone know of a phone that meets my desired criteria that works with the ADB?
thanks, Gary

Heres a few things to try, preferably in this order:

Open your SDK Manager. Be sure to choose Run as Administrator. Update "Google USB Driver" if you can.

Be sure USB Debugging is checked on your phone's Developer Options.

This one might be phone or version specific, but ill say it anyway: Go to Settings, then Storage. Open the App's Settings via Menu button or the button with 3-4 small squares, which should be at the top right corner. The only option is "USB computer connection". Select it. There should be 2-3 options now, Mass Storage*, Media device (MTP) and Camera (PTP). Only one can be selected, make sure Mass Storage or Camera (PTP) is selected.

Next, right click My Computer, go to Manage, Device Manager, <your phone>. Right click your phone, and click Update Drivers or Update Driver Software. You have 2 things to try here: Browse for your Google USB Drivers, which is located in <sdk folder>\extras\google\usb_driver. Click Next and see if it installs. If it doesnt, right click <your phone> and click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer". Click ABD Interface. It should be near the top of the list.

This should get your phone connected. Please note that in the menu Settings/Storage/App-Settings/USB computer connection, if Media Device and Camera are the only 2 options, youll have to switch back and forth to develop android, and to transfer files. The Mass Storage is basically both, if your phone has the option.

Please reply if these methods work or dont work.

Javasirc,
Thanks for answering my post. I am using a Virgin Mobil Chaser phone. If you go to the forum for that site you will find that at least two other developers had the same problem I am having and decided to use other phones. Following your instructions, I did the following...

Updated Google USB driver to rev. 7
When I go to Settings -> Storage I only see...
SD Card...
total Space (read only)
Available Space (read only)
Unmount SD card
Erase SD card
Internal Storage...
Available Space

I tried to install the google driver but that brought up a dialog that says "The best driver software for your device is alrady installed ->Android Composite ADB Interface. I can't find any options that show Mass Storage, Media device etc on the phone.

The driver details says the driver provider is Google, date = 8/11/2009, driver version 2.0.10.2.

I never was given an option to pick from a list.
When I install the "Chaser driver" that I found on the internet the same thing happens: Windows can see the phone but ADB cannot.
I just want to find a phone that will work.
