Dear all
I would like to develop an application that would allow me to locate my friends on the map using real life positioning.
There are plenty apps that already do that, mnatalka: for instance Google Latitude (stock on your phone), FourSquare, Waze, Glympse, GPS Tracking, Family Locator, TheftAware, etc. etc. Most are free and they all work with GPS (if on and available) with an accuracy of up to about 20 feet.
Can someone please help me to find out what technologies would i need?
E.g. GPS and cell tower triangulation. But since there already are a number of apps for this purpose it seems you would be reinventing the wheel.
Unless you manage to build a
better mousetrap of course!
FourSquare is so good that it got a number of Tunesian opposition leaders tracked down and arrested effortlessly and beaten up by the secret police of the old regime in February of this year! That is the other side of being trackable! Not to mention millions and millions of adulterers, and other sneaks. None of those want to be tracked!
So my favorite is Glympse, because its tracking sessions expire after max 4 hours in any case (easily extendable by tapping though), and because only those with the link for
that specific session can track you.
Can be convenient when you're for instance on a long car or train trip home and you want to let your significant other know exactly how much progress you're making so that he/she knows exactly when to expect you. In lieu of having to call (or answer one) every 5 minutes...
