Help device not syncing with or recognised by pc

i have a desire hd running 2.3.3 sense 3.0 (not rooted), and for some time now have had difficulty connecting the device to any computer laptop.

when i connect the device to a pc i get a popup message saying the device is not recognised. ive tried updating drivers, uninstalling them and tried it on other computers though get the same problem. when i connect it to a computer i do not get the option to choose charge only or usb storage etc and when i select the option from menu --> settings --> connect to pc --> default connection type nothing happens unless i choose charge.

other programmes, including htc sync fail to recognise the device. i have tried a factory reset a number of times though to no avail. usb debugging is selected and the device is not rooted (and as long as this problem persists i cant, to my knowledge, root it and my computers fail to recognise it).

this is most annoying! ive tried reading through other similar threads though havent found anything to solve the problem. any help? thanks!

Just out of interest, have you tried using a different USB cable? I used to be able to use one that came with my wife's phone but then, all of a sudden, it seemed to give up the ghost... it would still charge, but the computer wouldn't recognise my phone any more.

I have used the USB cable that came with my phone and it works... my phone is recognised.

Have been having a proper search for you... have come up with a couple of possibles for you to have a look at...

If you have a look at the following threads and let us know if any of them sort your issue:

http://androidforums.com/desire-support-troubleshooting/78485-not-syncing-device-not-recognised.html
http://androidforums.com/desire-support-troubleshooting/64808-htc-sync-cant-find-my-phone.html

(I know that these two threads are actually related to the Desire, not the DHD, but the issues do sound the same as yours)

Hope this helps... like I say, let us know if it does (so others will know if they suffer the same issue) or doesn't (and we can try to find another solution)

ok... ive tried removing startup items from msconfig as suggested in one of the threads, though to no avail.

ive tried usb debugging and stay awake. also no change

ive uninstalled all htc files on computer and reinstalled them thoug hagain problem persists,

however, the problem is happening on various pcs - windows 7, vista and xp, and doesnt work on any of them. usb cables work fine with my girlfriends desire s (with firewall/antivirus on/off) so im pretty sure its a phone issue. ive tried myltiple factory resets to no avail... getting deperate here! thanks for the help though

one thing i think though... one of the links mentioned something about installing htc sync directly from sd card. i tried mounting sd card directly onto laptop though could not find the folder. is it possible that a necessary folder is missing from the sd? im not using the original sd that came with the device (upgraded to 32gb) and i might have deleted a necessary file/folder

No problemo... does sound a little strange. I'll have a bit more of a dig for you and see what I can find.

May be a case of speaking to your carrier/HTC... as I say, I'll see what I can find for you first though!

Don't think that should matter... it comes already on the SD card, so you can install it the first time.

Just a thought... instead of using Sense, have a try with MyPhoneExplorer. this is the app for your phone... you can download the computer client from their website... it works in the same way as HTC's Sync and I know a lot of people who have said it's better. I've actually got it on my phone/computer, but don't really use it... don't really sync my phone.

It's worth trying to see if it works... you don't have anything to loose :)

yep, i have it though it only works though wifi

Grrr... I thought I might have it for you there!

Ooooh... ooooh... just one more thing just came to mind... you could try cleaning the USB socket on the phone... may be able to just blow in it, but my need to use a canister of air (so that you get more pressure)... it could be that there's a bit of pocket fluff or something in there that's not letting the USB connect properly

That's the problem I had with mine, couldn't mount my SD card on my computer for months, it was driving me crazy. All I did was get a paperclip (a sewing needle or something similar will work too) and clean out the usb port on my phone, some fluff came out and now it works perfectly :D

That is exactly what I was thinking about... it came to me all of a sudden that I'd read your thread on this exact issue and suggested the solution.

The only reason I didn't suggest using a paperclip/needle is that I wouldn't fancy using one... just me... I'm sure it'd be fine but, knowing my luck, I'd end up breaking the phone!! :o

Actually now you mention it, I do have a warning to give...

WARNING: Cleaning it out with a paperclip, if you do it too forcefully, might take a chunk of plastic out of the usb port! (Not the connector but one of the corners.) Completely forgot about this but I did that and now if the screen is on I can see through the phone :o

Phone still works without a problem though :D

tried my airbrush on it this morning... still no luck on various computers and operating systems.

im still wondering if i need a particular sync folder or file on the mobiles sd card in order for it sync properly?

Gutted... sorry that nothing's worked so far! Have you tried a paperclip/pin (it could be that whatever is actually quite stuck in there - just be very careful! :)

Not as far as I'm aware... it's only for the first install and says that you need to connect the phone and install from the SD card, as there is no CD with the drivers on.

I've just plugged my phone in as USB mas storage and found the HTC Sync application (that can be run on the computer - launches HTCSync3.0.5439.exe) - I can put this in my dropbox for you if you would like (that way you would have a copy to put on your SD card)... not sure if this would be of much use, as you can't connect your phone to your computer (guess you'd have to use a card reader to put it on the SD card)

Let me know if you want me to sort you the file by dropbox though!! :)

i guess its worth a try :) i cant use a card reader and unmount the sd card to add the file that way (or can just download the file straight to the sd card from your dropbox)

No worries... just waiting for the file to sync on dropbox and will put you a link up!

Not sure if this will help, but worth a try!!

no luck again, though thanks for the advise as its similar to what i was thinking. tried switching cables again. one does nothing (other than charge) though the other one at least brings up a pop-up saying device not recognised. both cables work fine with my girlfriends desire s

Have been having a bit more of a look and all I can come up with as a suggestion would be to speak to your carrier and ask them to have a look at it as a warrantee claim!
