Root dGB - From Scratch!

Right, after messing around with the memory issue on the Desire for a while, I now want to root. The new Adobe Flash update has pushed it over the edge. I don't have that many apps installed and it is quite slow and always showing the low memory icon.

I've also never liked the idea of Sense running in the background - I've never used Sense, I've always used Launcher Pro, which I like.

  • I want to get rid of all the rubbish I don't want and speed up my phone
  • I want to finially have enough space on the phone to enjoy it
  • I want to have a nice battery icon in the top bar to show % left

I don't think I'm asking too much here?

My phone is a completely stock sim-free Desire (apart from running Launcher Pro + the Move Apps to SD without Root using the PM setinstalllocaiton hack).

I have not rooted.

SURoot's gGB looks exactly what I am after, but I am finding it hard to follow exactly what I need to do.

I'd like to think I am not a complete noob at this (built a hackintosh a while back), but I realise this is a different area of modding.

Could someone please explain step-by-step exactly what I need to do?

1. Do this
2. backup by doing this X
3. Wank me off
4. etc..

I ask as I am sure others who are looking to root and run a custom ROM are thinking the same if they have never done it before. To be honest, gGB looks exactly what most people who own the Desire are after - SO, if we can get a good guide here, I am sure a lot more people would be running gGB..

I'd appreciate the extra help, as I know there are guides up for different sections of rooting and applying, but it's all a bit fragmented - for example, I read up on everything, then got stuck on APN's and the HBOOT sections  I do what, when? :(. A nice easy to follow guide for a particular ROM from rooting start, backing up, applying rom, etc would be great. I'd like that to be dGB!

If anyone fancies helping, I am sure I can find a few quid in my Pay Pal to buy you a beer to help ease your fingers after all the typing :p

By the way, if this helps anyone trying to help me, the specification of my phone is:

I'll try;)
read ALL ABOUT IT! Read all the guides, they are the answer.
root using unrevoked.
take a nandroid backup [boot to recovery, (vol down and power). this is your stock rooted nandroid, keep safe;)
install ti backup [from market] take a backup, menu, batch, user apps
s-off using alpharev, boot and make sure working.
flash dGB rom boot and make sure working.
nandroid backup
flash dGB hboot [60 or 65 your choice;)] boot and make sure working.
restore your apps via Ti, DON'T restore ANY SYSTEM Data. APP DATA Only.
Think that that is about it!
someone will be along to confirm all that soon!

I am not certain that this is for you, though. You have a CDMA-phone, right? No SIM-card?

Ask SUroot for definite answers, but I don't think that dGB supports CDMA phones.

Look at Oxygen or Redux. I think one of them might work with a cdma phone... And they are quite slim too.

But Rowlers summary is spot on for a SIM phone!

I don't understand - I have a SIM card in my phone?? It was purchased as a sim-free phone that was open to any network. I put my UK O2 card in it and have been using it ever since?

Looks like a gsm phone from the information I can see.

What does that mean? :(

If it were a CDMA desire then it would be a different
Radio starting with a 2.

:(

Sorry for muddling the water! I understood "sim free" to mean without a sim, and not a free sim open to all operators.

That's second language misunderstandings for you!

Ah, okay, no problem. I was getting confused (more) there :p

At least you have a second language ;)
