Be VERY careful adding water to hot oil. Rapid steam expansion is a type of explosion and can cause severe burns.
Hint #2: if you're using enough oil to cause any danger, you need to use a LOT LESS oil! Unless you're cooking in industrial quantities, you should only need around a dessert spoonful, maybe 2.

It is actually transmitting. The TiVo goes nuts when it is upsidedown.It may be a faulty button. To see if the remote control is actually emitting an IR signal, view the "business" end of the remote control through your camera phone - the emitter diode will glow when viewed through most digital cameras.
