Help Difference between Alerts and Notifications?

I have audio profiles pro.

My MUTE profile says that Alerts are on 0 volume. Great, this is what I want.

However, when I look at the quick widget setting - it appears to say "N" which I presume stands for notifications is on volume 6. How do I make this volume zero and what types of notification will it alert me of?

every app that has a "notication" can be toggle to on or off within the app it self, most apps ive seen you hit the menu key when in the app(menu key is the one to the left of the home button) then settings then Notifications

I think Jellybean tries to change the setting to vibrate every time I change it. Never happenned with ICS.

I thought there was no more individual notification volume on JB? It uses the same volume as the ringer.
