Difference between Google Talk and Google+ Messenger

Hey,

I downloaded Google+ the other day and a separate app called Messenger was automatically installed with it. As you've probably guessed, this is an app for chatting with people in your G+ circles. However, my phone came with Google Talk pre-installed, which is for talking to other Gmail users. This seems a little superfluous as they're both iterations of Google accounts. Anyone know if there's a plan to merge these apps or if one of the apps can preform both functions? It seems like they should at least have integrated G+ chat with the main app. Anyone know the reason for all this division?
