Difference between Moto and Droid?

Love my Maxx. But as I wait for the Moto X+1 I was wondering if there's a basic difference between the Droid line and the Moto line? Do I care if this new upcoming phone is the new Moto or a new Droid?

Droid Mini/Ultra/Maxx are only on Verizon. Moto X is on 5 carriers.

Droid Ultra and Moto X are almost identical except for the screen. The Ultra is larger.

Maxx when released had the longest lasting battery in the world and 32GB of storage.

My answer is always the same ... you should always pick up a phone you are about to buy and handle it. If you don't know within 15 seconds that it is a good fit for you ... don't buy it.

This basically answers my quesiton. So it's not like the Droid line has 'X' as a standard feature and the Moto line phones all feature 'Y'

I was asking because some of the reports on the new leaked images say 'maybe it's the new Droid not the new Moto', when in reality it doesn't matter what you call it.

Verizon has more of a say over what features goes into the droid brand, and they seem to go for higher quality feeling materials.

I'm on Sprint - so it may be worth double checking as I'm going from memory here, but the droid line in the recent past has featured kevlar backing (ultra), the moto blur skin (ultra &maxx), and larger batteries (maxx)

The regular moto phones are very close to stock android - and have been receiving very fast updates

There was no blur (or any) skin with the Ultra/Maxx/Mini from last year. They are functionally the same phones as the Moto X, with larger displays on the Maxx and Ultra, a smaller LCD display on the Mini (with an LED notification light rather than active display), a larger battery on the Maxx with Qi charging, and, as you noted, slightly different style (though strangely very little branding on the phones.) There are slight differences in the pre-installed software on the X vs. the Droids, plus different ringtones and boot animations, but, otherwise, somebody familiar with a Moto X could pick up a Maxx or Ultra and be very pleased to be using almost exactly the same phone. And, for once now, the Droids are on a higher version of Android than the Verizon Moto X phones.
