i have an HTC hero and my wife has an LG Axis i was looking at her market and tried to find some apps on my phone that i saw on hers but i couldnt find them. we both have the same carrier. are their different markets for different phones

Since the new market update, Apps will not show up if not compatible with the phone. For example, if you search for an app that's only compatible with froyo, you wouldn't find it when searching from Android devices with 2.1 or lower.

Not true at all. I was able to download froyo task killer on my sons hero (because it opens system task manager), after update he no longer has it in the market.
