Difficulty pairing phone with car Bluetooth

I have an htc my touch and I can't get my car to even recognize it let alone let it hook up. My g2x worked great. Owners manual said I would have to type the pin code into my phone while it was doing the synching process. How do you do this. I have a quick start guide which does not really tell you anything. Thank you for any help.

When the phone is trying to pair, it'll give you a text box to type the code into. If you don't get that, the phone isn't seeing the car. If you're sure you're putting the car into pairing mode, go to the car dealer and ask for help.
