Help Digital Compass is it needed for Google Maps? Or is GPS enough?

Digital Compass [built in hardware] is it needed for Google Maps or anything else? Or is the built in hardware GPS enough?

Was looking at the Moto G Plus (4th Gen.). It does not have a hardware Digital Compass.

There was some discussion both ways:
Google Maps will work. Google Maps won't work.

Without a hardware Digital Compass. Will a Compass APP from the Google Play Store along with the built in hardware GPS be a good enough replacement or not?

I'm guessing that what you're referring to as 'digital compass' is indeed built into a Moto G Plus. It won't be referred to as that though, look for the GPS and Orientation sensors. There are of course compass apps you can just install from the Play Store but I'll suggest an alternative as it's a multi-purpose utility, the 'GPS Status & Toolbar' app. It's primary function is to interact with a phone's GPS and includes some useful diagnostic and maintenance tools but it can also be a used as a compass. When you start it the app up the compass is the primary feature (as shown in the screen captures on its Play Store page):

Hey there

I have got moto g 3rd generation and yes the digital compass what your referring to mean is there in it , Google maps for sure do work and will work on your phone without any app.

Am I allowed to post a Lenovo forum link that I think explains it all.

From a Moto Moderator:
"GPS shows location. It will do this on a map in offline mode if you download map data. It will also show you your movements and direction while moving.

But if standing still without a compass, nothing will show if you facing north or south."
