I'm planning a round the world trip through 4 continents. I want to cancel my service with Verizon and use the GPS with brut google maps and mapdroid.

My question is: Once I cancel my service, will the phone still be functional or will it be paralyzed because it is not associated with an account? Will the phone have a constant nag screen that says looking for service provider or something like that?

What is the point in cancelling your service? You could just turn off your mobile connection. And just use wifi when available. I'm not sure if you need a verizon account to use the gps functionality, but I think you do.
