Help DInc2 with no data USB connection

Hi Everyone -
I just got a new to me, used DInc2 from (gasp!) ebay. It continues to have a problem: there is no data connection between the usb cable and my laptop. I get a great charge plugged into my computer, just no USB love. Bluetooth, great connection. Syncing with the cloud (google), yup. But no USB.
I am using a 2011 Macbook Pro (OS 10.7.4) and have android 2.3.4 on the phone.
Reading through others' troubles linking up DInc2's and Macs, there is lots of talk about getting a 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' message, but i don't even get that. I don't even get the little USB symbol notification icon on my status bar at the top of the phone saying i'm linked up.
I tried different cords, various different syncing applications (double twist, sync mate, selling media sync), but no one wants to talk to the phone...

So, is this a hardware issue (the port? The port pins?) or could it be a software issue in the phone? Do you think a factory reset might help (my boyfriend's idea)? I think i'm going outside to get the air compressor in on the action, and i'll do a factory reset, but if any one else has any inspired thoughts, i would LOVE to hear them. (Thankfully, i'm still in my 30 day warrantee period with the ebay seller.)
Thanks in advance...

I've had two DINC2's (refurbished one after my charging port broke on the first) and neither were ever able to be recognized by any software installed on my laptop. Both would just charge like you describe.

I ended up one time on the phone with HTC support and they weren't able to sort out why the HTC software wouldn't recognize my phone... no solution offered, just a vague promise to have someone else from HTC follow-up which never happened.

I did try a factory reset (wanted to root my phone), but that didn't help.

Kwalla - so, your laptop never even acknowledged that your Dinc2 was plugged in via USB either? So frustrating.
Did you ditch the phone(s) at that point, or did you just use it without a USB connection? I tried Bluetooth to move music files directly, and that didn't work, and i tried moving music files onto my SD card when it was in my laptop, but that didn't work either. I finally gave up and got onto google music, so that i could at least sync up with my music from the cloud. I guess i don't really need it that badly, but i am vexed by the principle of it not working.
Thanks for your help,
K

Well, it was only a big deal for me when I wanted to root my phone. As far as I can tell, without the cable connection, you can't root/flash the phone.

I use the following:
Dropbox to automatically send pictures to the cloud... On my laptop, I have Box.com set to be "my documents" and inside that is my Dropbox folder... so all of my pictures end up: phone, laptop, dropbox.com, box.com. Why? No idea, but it's what I did. If I delete from dropbox.com, that removes it from box.com and my laptop, so not really difficult to manage.

Airdriod the few times I want to control my phone with my laptop -- send texts, move other files...

I don't really consume media via my phone... I'll listen to music via Spotify, not my own copies of songs. In fact, I have no music of my own on my phone. I don't really have any need to move a lot of files back and forth.

I forget exactly how I did it, but I did end up on the phone with HTC support, you may want to go their webpage, fill out the help form and see what you get. Just because mine couldn't be solved, doesn't mean yours is the same.

Kwalla, thanks a bunch for your help. It's good to hear that the USB connection isn't as vital as i had expected. I will go to the cloud. I had considered rooting, but i don't think it's necessary for my level of use.
