Dipping My Toe In

Newbie
I've never been one for "bleeding edge" technology. It typically takes me several versions of anything before I'll join the party. This said I've waited far too long before getting on to the Android bandwagon.

My history with mobile devices is very limited, Ericsson phones, SonyEricsson phones, an iPod Touch 2nd Gen then 3rd Gen, a Kindle and more recently a hand me down iPhone 3G.

I've worked with Microsoft operating systems since the early 90s. I work with Solaris and various flavours of Linux. I'm an IT "Jack of all trades".

The form size, power and price of the Google/Asus Nexus 7 tablet is what's dragged me, kicking and screaming, into the tablet era.

Earlier this year while out on a walk I lost my iPod Touch. This was, by far, my favourite device. "instant" e-mail, Internet and apps. The Touch was my alarm clock, my music system, my calendar. With wifi at home, at friends and families places and more increasingly in public places, like the local pub, I was not tied to a contract and could use instant messenger along with programs like Skype to stay in touch with the world. I was on the verge of buying another iPod Touch to replace the one that I lost when the Nexus 7 was announced. Same price, bigger screen, more powerful processor and a step in to the world of Android.

As many articles have pointed out, the tablet is not new. Asus attempted to sell a 7" tablet very similar to the Nexus but it didn't quite make it to mainstream. When the Tegra 3 was matched with the Asus tablet it was quickly snatched up by Google. With this "back story" I'm quite comfortable that the hardware, while it's likely to become the market leader for a while is not too new to be a risky buy.

I'm searching daily for news and updates on the Nexus and finding lots of news linking back to here so I'm hoping this will be a good place to help me learn more about Android.
