Help Disable contact sync?

I use a Palm (really ACCESS) desktop on my PC. To sync my Droid 2 Global with that, I use CompanionLink and DejaOffice. Love it, no problems.

The problem is that the Contacts on the Droid keep populating records and fields with junk data (names, addresses, notes, everything) from somewhere else. I really want to remove this extraneous data and prevent its return. It contains dozens of unrelated data from unrelated contacts into the Contact records. E.g., my wife's record in Droid Contacts has 23 phone numbers, seven or eight names and addresses, etc.

Q: Where is that junk data coming from? What are the consequences of deleting it? (I do use Gmail, FWIW).

I think the culprit is the Droid's Sync Contacts feature.

Q: Is there a way to turn the Contact Sync off, on the phone and/or the PC, and/or a way to keep it out?

All I want to sync is my Gmail, and I have an app on the phone for that. If I do manage to stop the Contact sync, will it affect my Gmail sync?

Many thanks for your help.

Glad to hear you're liking CompanionLink! As for turning of the Droid's Contact sync, this should help:

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts & Sync
  2. Tap the account you want to manage
  3. Check/un-check the options you want to change (i.e. "Contacts")
  4. Back out to save your changes
Let me know if that does it for you!

Thanks, David, but my Droid does not have the features you mention.
1. Under "Settings" there is only "Accounts", "Accounts and Sync".
2. My only Accounts are "Phone (backup Assistant)", my Facebook link, and my Gmail link.
3. In my Gmail link, I have the options to sync Contacts, Gmail, and Calendar, but the only option is "Sync now". No setting or option allow me to not-sync.
4. So, I made no changes.

FWIW, more background. The Droid runs System version: Verizon.2.4.330.A956.Verizon.en.US. It Runs Android version: 2.2. Baseband version: N_01.48.05R. Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-g9e2c6d xrpk47@il93lnxdroid25 #1. Build number: VZW. ERI version 6. PRL version 52297. I hope that helps; most of it is beyond my scope.

Cheers,

Dick

On the DROID I have in front of my, I go to Settings > Accounts & Sync Settings, then under the section entitled "Manage Accounts" I can select the gmail account on the phone and uncheck "Sync Contacts" or "Sync Calendars" or even "Sync Gmail" - are you able to see these options? Let me know and we'll go from there!

OOPS! Typo. I meant to say "1. Under "Settings" there is only "Accounts", NO "Accounts and Sync".

Hmm... try this: Open the Contacts app on your phone, press the Menu key, then select "Accounts". There, you should see a "Manage Accounts" section. Select the account in question and ensure that "Sync Contacts" is off.

Does this method work for you? I have a DROID to check this on, but not a DROID Global. They should be pretty similar, though.

Hi, David,

Thanks for sticking with this.

In my Accounts there are three entries: "Phone (backup Assistant)", my Facebook link, and my Gmail link. When I hit the Menu button, I get only "Add account" and "Picture Source".

It is starting to look as if the Global is different in this respect. Do you have access to one to experiment with?

Cheers.

I don't have a Global, but I did get a hold of a DROID 2. Looking at it, it is a bit different, so I apologize for the confusion! Try this: go into your Settings app, select "Accounts" and then tap on the Gmail/Google account that you wish to modify (your gmail link). There, you should see a screen that looks similar to this: http://media.tested.com/uploads/0/1507/15755-googacount_super.png

From there, simply uncheck "Sync Contacts" to disable contact sync. Let me know if that works for you!
