Root Disabling Touch Wiz?

TouchWiz seems to be baked into the ROM, it doesn't seem like it can be separated from the system. But this is what will hopefully motivate a dedicated developer (who would know far more about this than I) to port something such as AOSP, CyanogenMod, or AOKP.

You can download another launcher like trebuchet.apk and put that into your system apps folder. Make it your default and then delete the touchwiz launcher. I think the real problem is too many system apps from Samsung eating up all your ram. Hopefully, someone will get a list of safe ones to delete. I'll wait for a custom Rom. A custom ICS, with the 1.8GHz OC kernel with smartassV2 governor is way faster and smoother than JB. I have Google Now installed too, so the only benefit of the current JB is the improved notification center.

TW can be removed with Titanium Backup if you are rooted. I have done this on both ICS and JB successfully with no ill effects.

So... this method makes it disappear from the notification center too? I thought it was a system-level thing that Samsung modified. Wasn't expecting that to be such a simple fix. o.O

If you're nervous about removing anything just freeze it in Titanium and you have the benefits of an uninstall while keeping the app around just in case things get wonky.

Unless I'm absolutely positive something isn't needed (like the Virgin bloatware) then I usually freeze instead of uninstall. The relatively small amount of space it takes up in storage is worth having the peace of mind.

Where can I get the trebuchet.apk and how do I make it my default?

Search for it. You can also install something from the store, like Nova launcher. Then go to manage applications by hitting menu when you are in the app drawer. Select the touch wiz launcher and clear defaults. Hit home and you can choose a new default.
