It's likely your phone is still set to WCDMA only and not to WCDMA/GSM.

i'm on my 3rd smartphone and 2nd android
just compare android to iOS as Linux to Mac OS

Maybe there is a "bug" on my Galaxy SII

But when I disable WCDMA the reception work fine
When I enable WCDMA /GSM (auto) the reception is coming up and down and sometime the oerator can say that I'm unknown

For that reason my old cheap Nokia 2600 classic still miss me

No I think this is not the carrier but the phone

In fact I'm in europe (no WCDMA here)

So the phone is probably spending to much ressource to try to find a WCDMA signal

Since I've switched to GSM Only mode, there is no problem anymore

(Good to know for European hoder of a Samsung Galaxy SII)
