Disappearing app icons

Hi

I have a HTC Desire HD.

From time to time a number of icons will change from their normal display to that of the android emblem I cannot then launch the app. Luckily I have kept backups of the apps bit it is a pain.

Strangely enough it is not always the same app that disappears.

Does anyone have any idea why this has started happening, it started about a month ago.

are the apps saved on the SD card? there may be something wrong with the card

Hadn't thought of that but some are and some are not

I meant just the apps that are going bonkers, are they the ones that are saved on the card.

That's what I meant, some of the icons that disappear are on my card the others are on the phone.
