Disappearing downloads

My friend's Moto G 5 g went into fastboot yesterday morning. It snapped right out of it, but when it did most of the downloads were missing. Thank goodness things were backed up to sd, but how could this happen and how do we prevent it? How would we restore lost files if not from sd?

When you say it "went into fastboot" the obvious question is "what where they doing?". You can boot in fastboot mode if you restart a phone while holding some button(s) down (which button(s) can be different on different phones), so if you restart the phone and don't realise you are pressing a button, or if the button is stuck, then you can end up in fastboot mode unexpectedly. This is harmless, but also shouldn't erase anything unless you tell it to (and can't be as specific as erasing particular files). But if you are using the phone normally, or it's just lying untouched on a table, and it boots into fastboot mode then my guess would be that there's a fault in the phone. And in that case it's possible that the disappearing files are another symptom of the problem.

As for restoring files, if they are in internal storage that's tricky. 15 years ago you could just use ordinary file recovery software, but since they switched to using MTP for USB file transfer that's not an option. There are plenty of PC apps that will claim they can recover files, but it's very hard to find independent verification that any of them actually work so I'd be wary of paying money for them. And I doubt anything running on a phone can do it without root, if at all. My advice would be the same as it is for any other file recovery question: if it's important, make sure you have a backup that's not on your phone OR sd card (because if your phone is lost or stolen you lose the sd card at the same time, so having your only backup on there is risky anyway).

I can't imagine deliberately fastbooting a phone. It's a plague to be avoided, in my opinion. Oops, it did it again, less than one hour ago, and certainly without my permission. This time I guess there was no damage. I have a Toshiba portable hard drive, 2 tb, not yet used. How do I hook it up to this nightmare Moto 5 G?

Via usb cord buddy, I so happen to have a moto five g.

My sympathies, but how do I connect the two? My aim is to copy as much as I can to the drive before this thing goes belly up, which seems almost inevitable. I just hope I can do this soon...

Plug in the usb port to your p.c. and click on USB transfer for each file.

Then you can open up windows file and just profit.

If we did have any that "just worked", I probably wouldn't be troubling you all nearly as much. There is that Samsung A15 but I think overall it's an inferior device. Still, its mere functionality shows its superiority, I suppose. Meanwhile, this rotten Moto 5 G has rebooted 4 times just this morning, in less than 10 minutes. The last time it actually went into fastboot and is now working as if it never happened. As for plugging this hunk of junk into a pc, somebody has a wonderful imagination. That sorry crimebook apparently will not recognize ANY device plugged into it no matter what. If I knew a tech expert within walking distance I'd likely be there on a regular basis (lucky you for not existing).

Yeah, I've been noticing that theme. Every Moto I've had for at least 3 years has had some kind of fastboot problem. I wish I could afford a good phone from a decent manufacturer, maybe with a "real" camera...
