disheartened

Hi Hi everyone,
I'v been a big fan of Android for a few years now, and my wife is a fan of Apple
I'v just recently upgraded to a Note 2 from a GS2, and her to the 5S.
I was very excited to get my new phone home and set it up.......
What a huge pain in the butt. Just to get my my apps+data onto my new phone! Sure there are a couple of App's that will get most of your data. But the only way to get everything is to root your device's. How fair is that? I paid for a lot of those app's! And now I have to void the warranty on my new phone by rooting it so TiBu can do it's thing.I'm not an IT pro or even a weekend warrior so I would be one of those people who are hopelessly lost on the root forum.
The WORST part of it all is my wife sync'd her new Apple to icloud & iTunes and that's it! Everything came across. It's embarrassing really how far advanced Apple are compared to Android in this area.
I'm so bummed out about this I even considerd..... jumping on the Apple bandwagon:(

Just wondering if you had failed to set up sync on your previous phone. If you did, and then allowed your new phone to be synced, you should've been good to go. That's how it's always worked for me.

Did you consider using Helium (which does not require root) rather than Titanium? As long as your GS2 is on Android 4.x that should work - I used it to transfer my stuff from my old Desire to my HTC One prior to rooting the One (though now I am rooted and back to using Titanium).

There is also an option to back up app data with Google servers. I've never really used this though so don't know how well it works (Edit: ah, I see Moody has beaten me to this one :)).

It's not that Apple is advanced, it's that Android is advanced. Apple keeps dictatorial control over everything, so it can provide things like the backup your wife used. But it's closed-source, so developers can only develop what Apple lets them develop. (It's the same thing with Windows vs. Mac, and always has been.)

If you want a device that you don't have to think about, you just use, Apple is your better choice. But if also you want to use your car off-road and to haul small loads, a Hyundai sedan isn't for you.

Hi Moodyblues,
Thanks for your thoughts. Yeah, I'v sync'd with Google and Sammy servers with the GS2 & the N2. They're both good at saving what you aquire from each but unfortunately no data (app savings). Unless I stuffed up that simple task. I'll check my settings and try again later.

Hi Hadron,
Thanks for your input. After reading forums on this site and a couple of others I did discover Helium (formerly Carbon). I even purchased the premium version so I could backup to Google Drive (sd cards cost alot more). It done a very good job, but alas, not all of the data.
I contacted CWM to ask " why?" the tech' guy (who seems knowledgeable and was patient) answering my emails informed me that some apps store thier data in an external folder and cannot be transferred with the app', and that the only way is to root and " clone the file tree".
After continuing my research I have read that some Developer's do this in a bid to stop piracy.
My GS2 is 4.1.2 and is i9100t supplied by Vodafone Oz.

Hi Rukbat,
Thanks for your thoughts. I hear what your saying and keep telling myself the same things.
I don't think I could really jump ship.
It's just that Android is used by a lot of people in the " mainstream " nowadays and should cater for those people.
Remember, Microsoft really took off when they pinched Piont & Click ( the mouse ) from Zerox and put out Windows. Making computers accessible to the general public.

Here's what I do when swapping phones- I have a microSD (32GB) that I procured during the holidays for about $6. When I swap phones, I copy every folder from /sdcard (your home directory) to it, or to my desktop, then copy it over to my new device. This will work for, in my experience, about 80-90% of apps. A few it doesn't, and you DO need root for those, as the files are stored in /data/data (from the root directory of the device).

Its not really a shortcoming of Android, its an annoying "feature" by developers.

Hi dibblebill,
Thanks for your post. Most of all thanks for looking at the issue from a user's point of view.
I don't have a problem supporting Dev's and purchasing quality app's, Helium Premium was only $5. Although I may have to reconsider after recent developments. (Though $6 is a good deal for a sdcard).
It would seem Dev's are the problem, I don't know.

Its not all developers, let me clarify, its a few of them :p

At any rate, take a look around around the holiday season and you may find one.

I personally paid for Titanium Backup but then, these days, I root all my devices. I can't speak for Helium. That with an SD card guarantees consistency from device to device.

Hi dibblebill,
after reading your reply i went back re-read my 1st reply to you. I didn't mean to "tar all Dev's with the same brush", on the contrary CWM who wrote Helium were excellent in their support. And The app itself did everything it was supposed to, it captured ALL of my app's and 98% of the app data. I highly recommend it and the Pro version.
It seems that really it's just the "Corporate Developers" (Rovio & Glu in my circumstance) that play games with storing the data in an external file, maybe they make more money that way?
P.S holiday's just finished here in Sydney

G'day, welcome to AF! It's good to see another Sydneysider on here. I'm on the north side, whereabouts are you? Are you into live music at all?

To the topic at hand: I wouldn't have a clue, but I'm wondering if you can root your phone, do what you need to do, and then 'un-root' it without affecting the warranty. I'm sure someone else will be able to answer this last question...

Hi general eclect,
Thanks for the post.
I'm at the foot of the mountains.
Haven't gone to see a band play in a looong time (shift worker).
I have heard of rooting then unrooting, I think you have to Flash the original Kernel back onto the device..... I think.. you see that's the predicament, I'm not confident at doing things like that to my devices.
A big part of my issue is Android is not just a platform for IT people & hackers anymore, Dev's & Google should be working "Hand in Hand" to make it more user friendly were necessary.
Anyway, maybe I'll have to find an old device to "play" with.
It was good to hear from someone from our great southern land.
