Do Android phones support E-Mail Encryption?

I've been using a Blackberry device for work because it supports S/MIME e-mail encryption. We work on Department of Defense programs that require all e-mail communiques to be encrypted. My IT folks can't tell me whether or not Androids support e-mail encryption. Anybody on the forum know for sure? I would love to be able to switch to an Android phone but can't unless it suppot this critical capability. thanks!
