Do certain application effect hardware components in smartphones?

All I know is that once I started downloading apps on my SGS2, the camera started to take horrible quality pictures. Pictures that would come out too dark, hazy, glowing red eyes, etc... And these were taken with flash on.

I remember taking some excellent quality looking pictures the first few times I used the camera, but as time went on the camera stopped taking those excellent quality looking pictures, the same thing happened with the video quality.

I'm hoping this doesn't happen with the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Is it possible the camera settings were changed and forgotten about? I did that once when I was taking pictures, a month later I used the camera again and couldn't figure out what the heck was wrong. I felt like an idiot when I looked through settings and realized I had the 'polarized' option checked.

Many problems and issues with Android are simply settings; look through your camera settings and see if anything is not standard. If you don't see anything suspect, reset camera settings to default and see if the pictures are different then.

Hope it works! : )

Also clean the camera lens.

I'm pretty certain it wasn't a dirty lens that was the root of the problem, because it was shielded by a hard plastic case. I rooted the phone several times, and I still continued to experience the same problem. I even switched phones from the dealer, which was worse because the phone froze several times whenever playing games or downloading apps.

These pictures were the same quality of those taken without flash or if anyone remembers what iPhone 4 pics looked like before flash was available.

Have you looked at the EXIF (Google that) information on your earlier good images and your latest bad images?
