Do most apps launch at startup? Running apps only get notifications?

Do most applications that have notifications for example apps that contain breaking news launch at start up? I remember on older android versions I hate to open an app upon reboot in order to get notifications.

I am assuming this isn't the case anymore?

Are apps that are on the running panel the only ones that would get notifications?

I am using an S3 and was curious on overall memory usage, etc.

Android manages memory and other resources on your phone in a way to make apps you use often launch faster. Generally, if there is memory available, Android will load what it thinks you may need in the near future. Apps loaded into memory are not necessarily running. The recent app list you get from holding down the home button lists apps that are loaded, but not necessarily running. They may be susupended.

I'm not sure how notifications work. It seems that if an app expects notifications, Android should get it and notify you. Your app does not have to be running. If you are not actively using an app, it is most likely not running, but susupended (or even not loaded). Also, each app may have settings on how it gets notifications. Some are push while others poll the network periodically.

This is why apps start at boot or remain persistent in RAM, regardless of whether you kill them or not.

Check a specific app's permissions for whether they start at boot or not. It's something devs have to specifically declare. Most news apps have it, for example.

So when I reboot my phone I only see like 6 apps in running apps even if I hadn't used them.

What pushes something on running apps on the app manager?

So to receive notifications you don't necessarily need to show up on running apps?

The most useful Android app on my tablet is "Advanced Task Killer". I see you're being told not to use task killers. With a good half of everything in Android being someone's spyware or other, I think that thinking is crazy. They stay booted for a reason. Notice how few actually have an EXIT that deletes their crapware from your memory? Ask yoursuspiciousself why. Every time I kill with Advanced Task Killer, even the free version, it restores the tablet from a sputtering piece of uselessness to a barely usable toy. I can even click keyboard letters without being ignored!!
