do privacy apps really really work?

i got orbot on my droid x and it says im on the tor network. takes a lil bit longer to load pages.
is my privacy really secure when im on this network?
what are some suggestions of some settings and apps a noob can try fairly easily to secure his or her data connection?
i hope im not breaking the rules...
