I understand that this allows the user to connect usb devices including flash and hard drives for easy transfer of files/media. What is the easiest way to transfer data to the phone?

Actually, the easiest way I've found is wirelessly via the Airdroid app.

Using a cable for file transfer works. I think I prefer using an ftp server (there are many to choose from) on the phone and using a client on the PC.

Or you can use programs like goodsync (has an ftp client built in along with folder sync'ing capabilities).

It's really up to the user.

Just one note of caution. It's been my experience that not every USB cable will work for file transfers. So make sure you can return it, or better yet, use the cable that comes whit the phone.
