Do you need phone carrier service to get wifi to work?

I purchased a HTC One V at a thrift store for $10 bucks.

Got it home and found out that it's actually active on Virgin Mobile. Appears to be voice and text only. Can't get cricket browser to connect via 3G or wifi.

When I try to turn on wifi it says "turning on" forever and then eventually will say "Error".

Do you have to have some data service in order to make this work?

If you already have wi-fi in your home (via modem, router, etc.), then you should be able to use that to get wi-fi to work on your phone.

Wifi and phone service are completely separate. (I have a few old not-activated phones I use on wifi.) It sounds to me as if you have a phone with a bad wifi radio.

Yes, that's my guess. DARN!!!!!

Wonder if I contacted HTC if they would send me a working one???
