Do i need to unlock the bootloader before flashing a custom recovery or can i just flash the recovery?

Do you need to unlock the bootloader for a custom recovery?

You need an unlocked bootloader to flash anything unofficial including custom recovery I'm afraid

Yeah. Root only gives you admin rights to the device. To flash unofficial firmware (like recovery or a rom/kernel) the bootloader has to be unlocked
