Does an Android device always default to WiFi when available?

I recently got an HTC Eris. I am reluctant to use much data over the phone plan which is the least expensive Verizon plan I can get.

If I am using data intensive services, such as Pandora or YouTube, will it always use WiFi, when available, rather than adding data to my phone plan total?

Thanks...

To my knowledge that will only happen if you have it set to constantly search for wifi which can drain the battery, and it has to have access to it and be in your saved access points.

Yes.. If your wifi radio is enabled.. And you are within range of a wifi signal that you have used before.

It will not connect to unknown signal

Thanks ... most of my usage has been through familiar access points, so I should not have a problem.

Hmmm ... I wonder if there is an app to let me know if for some reason the wifi signal is dropped and the device reverted to Verizon data service?
