Does Andriod have an equivalent to Airdrop?

I have been reading about the new features that Apple has announced with ios7. The airdrop feature is interesting but I was wondering what the android equivalent would be. I know Samsung has the S beam but is there a Google or an android version of this that would let you share files without having to be in the same room with someone?

Send them a Dropbox link?

I honestly don't know what airdrop does. Can you expand on its features?

It sounds like apples solving problems that don't exist

There are a lot of cloud solutions that enable file sharing. They can be two-way via the permissions you give. google drive, dropbox, copy, skydrive, etc. Just set up a folder and give the other person appropriate permissions.

AirDrop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I didn't read it all but this allows iOS users to share files with other iOS useres without the use of WiFi. Drop box allows two users to sync folders so that might be similar but you need WiFi or data connection of some kind for dropbox to work.

NO! That's not what it says. It says "... without the need of a Wi-Fi network or any configuration ... , it still uses wifi, just in a peer-to-peer mode.

So yeah, they're solving problems that dont exist :D

Not really, they just gave an existing service a different name. Its just like Airdroid/Kies air, difference is that its built into the system instead of using an app and a program on a PC. Samsung has something similar on their laptops to use with their phones called Sidesync but only works for Samsung PC's and has a dock. The good think about it though is that the phone becomes an extended monitor, so your mouse can control your phone as well. :p

Samsung Introduces Side Sync: 'PC In Mobile, Mobile In PC' With A Fatal Flaw

But rather than use a cross platform service that already exists, they feel the need to create a 1 platform service

Still solving a problem that isn't needed.

Aka playing catch up to android

Airdrop seems to be per to peer file sharing via wifi. You could look at apps such as ... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=adylitica.android.anysend&hl=en ... which "sort of" work the same, except you have to be on the same wifi network I think.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Sometimes the definitions of this stuff is a little confusing. It says that air drop is a wi-fi ad hoc service that does not need a wi-fi network. I understand that its a peer to peer network which I guess just means it does not have a central hub. Its just a series of computers linked together. Anyway, this app looks pretty close except it is through Wi-Fi. I'm going to try it out. I also have the airdroid app, but I did not realize you can use that between devices. I thought it was just between your phone & a computer, but now that I think about it I guess if you have a smart phone it is a computer

*If this is necroing this thread, I apologize. I haven't developed any forum etiquette yet, but I found a useful solution to this specific problem.*

I'd like to suggest Bittorrent Sync. It's available as a client on the website, which I can't link to, because I just signed up because of this thread, and the app is in the Play store. It uses bittorrent protocol to transfer files very quickly over your local network. It's technically still in beta, but it's working well for me so far. Check it out.
