Does Data Disable When WiFi Is Connected?

I have a new Galaxy Nexus and I was wondering...

Does my data automatically become disabled when my WiFi is connected?

Not sure if it is different for different phone or carriers, but I do know that with my own HTC EVO on Sprint, that when I am connected to WiFi, both my 3G and 4G antenna shut off. I know this for a fact because the WiFi at work allows me to surf the web and stream music, but blocks e-mail, and as soon as I turn-off the WiFi antenna, the e-mail updates. So I would say that the carrier data is turned off while you are connected to WiFi.

Yes it is disconnected but connects for sending/receiving mms, yes you can still make and take calls, it's not related.

So, if I am not receiving any SMS or MMS, then my data will not be using any of my battery?

Data is separate from receiving/dialing phone calls and text messages. You can receive phone calls and send text messages with your data off. MMS texting requires data (not wi-fi).

The above has been my experience with my droid razr.

If you're worried you're using data and connected via 3g or whatever, you can always download Data Enabler Widget from the market, then you'll know for sure you're not connected if you don't want to be.

What does Data Enabler do? Will it effect my battery poorly?

So, if I am home and my WiFi is on, my data is off and not using my battery?

when wi-fi is on and connected to a router, your 3g data connection will not be used, and will not use battery, but your wi-fi will. In some cases, wi-fi uses more battery than a 3g connection, every person's experience will vary.

Not to be an ass, but how many different ways do you need to read that your data connection is disconnected when you're on wifi?

When you're at home, why worry about battery? Plug it in.

So, if i have a widget to turn off my WiFi, my data turns back on when my WiFi is turned off, right? Why would I have a need for a Data Enabler if I am enabling my data upon turning off my WiFi?

You don't, forget about another app to have running.

When wifi is enabled, your moble's data is disabled. Wifi will override data. Not to mention the notification bar clearly shows what is in use.

So, I turned off my WiFi, but then my data connection never turned back on and I couldn't connect to the internet. My data connection remained off. I looked in my settings and it never went back on. Does it take some time to turn itself back on or something?

Packet data is supposed to be torned back on as soon as Wifi is disconnected.

If it doesn't, it may be turned off, or it didn't locate the network.

Try turning it off and back on manually.

Mate, I think you're misunderstanding.

Wifi overrides data packet mobile network (2, 3 or 4G (LTE)

If your 2/3/4G was ON before you started Wifi, they will be overriden, and as soon as you turn off the wifi, they will come back.

So, lemme get this straight…

If I am at work and I have my phone automatically switch off Wi-Fi, my data will be on.

However, when I get home and my Wi-Fi is automatically turned on, my data seems to remain on.

Do I wanna switch Airplane Mode on when I get home? Will that turn off my data connection and let me only connect via Wi-Fi?

So, it’ll say I am connected via a data connection, but I am not using it?

Even though I am not using it, will it continue to search for the cell towers and kill my battery? Is the only way to avoid my battery draining to manually turn off my data connection?

No custom anything, no ROM.

I'm confused because, while in Wi-Fi mode, my data connection still says that it is on (in my settings).

So, it may not be using the data connection, but is my phone still looking for a data connection? Is that draining my battery?

No, it's not active. In the settings it shows that it's enable, which is totally different from being ON.

Wifi will always override it, you can notice that the Wifi icon in your status bar will replace the data connection on as soon as you turn it on.

No, it will not affect battery because it is disabled.

I had a similar problem and I wrote myself a widget to switch exclusively from data to wifi connection. Search on the market "wifi 3g connection mode" and please tell me if it helps you.
