Does Flashing a new ROM replace the previous one ??

hey guys im new here and i recently rooted my evo 4g and im currently running the 'all in one sprint lovers ROM' and it kinda sucks , well at least i dont like it , so i was wondering if i just flash a new ROM what would happen to the previous one ? Or is there some certain steps i need to take ?? thx in advance guys .
