Does 'Google Maps Navigation' Need Internet Connection to work?

I'm going to Indonesia (from Australia) and want to use my Sony Xperia with 'Google Maps Navigation'.

Does anyone know if I can use it without an Internet connection (i.e, just using the GPS)?

The GPS will work, and it will be able to determine your coordinates. However, your phone then needs to connect to Google Maps in order to display the map image and/or calculate routes.

Do a search on the forum. There are lots of threads about offline Maps applications. I use MapDroid, but it doesn't do navigation or directions.
