Does Google Maps navigation use Data or GPS?

On my new ATT S3 I am confused if I am using Google maps for navigation. Am I using up my Data allotment or am I just using GPS without any Data use?

Thanks!

You use Data to download the map, the GPS just gives the map your coordinate location so it knows where to put the arrow.

what they others said is true...

data for map and points of interests...
GPS for where your car is and what direction you are headed.

but you can turn on MAP cacheing...turn off mobile data...
that way the map's information/data can be downloaded to your phone in your wifi areas. to be used when you are out driving.
but new information will need to be be downloaded if you leave the area or ask for new data that is not in your cached storage.
