Help Does HDMI support 5.1 on Stock Android

DaveRook

I'm trying to find a way to play 5.1 surround sound audio. It's been confusing due to Virtual 5.1. According to the Android docs, USB only supports 2 channel, even using the OTG adapters and as such, 5.1 is virtual (I think).

HDMI supports 5.1 surround sound but that doesn't mean that the player (the application) has to send 5.1 or support it!

My project is simple - I have a 5.1 audio file and need to send each channel to a separate route! I'm thinking of buying https://www.amazon.co.uk/Volador-Digital-Multi-Channel-Decoder-Converter/dp/B01F574W9C/ref=sr_1_2? so I can split the audio accordingly

The problem is, I've not bought the device yet and have no way of testing the HDMI port on my tablet (and don't want to buy something if it won't work!).

Has any one had luck playing 5.1 audio from their stock Android (version 4) device? Does it just work or is there anything complicated required to get it running?

Doesn't 5.1 systems usually require expensive proprietary licensing, like Dolby or DTS(Digital Theater System)? So I think with stock Android, probably not, although don't know for sure. And presumably certain manufacturers might include it, all depending what device you've actually got there.
