Does it matter about the updates or should I wait

When I got my Google Galaxy Nexus and was going to root it, it had 4.1, then came 4.2 and just when I got ready to go for it we get 4.2.1. I have downloaded Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0 and NRT_v1.6.0.sfx, Is this the way to go or should I wait for the software to catch-up with the updates?

GSM? or CDMA?

generally it is a good idea to wait for the update to be pushed to your phone if you are on CDMA.

GSM i cannot determine that one because i have never owned a GSM phone

Thanks for the reply - I 'm running 4.2.1 but the 1-click root method is referring to 4.2 as the latest update. I just wondered if it makes a difference if I am running 4.2.1.

4.2.1 was just some minor but necessary bug fixes. It's still just 4.2. There are perfectly stable stock AOSP ROMs built from source if you are Toro or Toroplus. If you are GSM you'll see the OTA in no time. If you are CDMA there's no reason to wait for an OTA. All Galaxy Nexus models are compatible for perfectly stable AOSP builds, whether officially supported through AOSP or not. Even the Toroplus got updated binaries from Google for 4.2 despite it not being "officially" supported through AOSP.

No I am not rooted. That is what I would like to do. I have been watching YOUTUBE videos to get the steps right. I have down loaded the NRT_v1.6.1.sfx Tool Kit but I am unsure of the correct steps to do the job. I sure would like to see a "step 1,2,3 How TO". I believe I need to install drivers - Unlock - Root. Do I need to reinstall the OS (Jelly Bean) after the root?

I have not done it in awhile but I believe that once you unlock it does a factory reset.
You do not need to reinstall any os.
Your apps and storage partition will get wiped so you best back up the phone.
That means your music.... pictures... etc.
