It's subjective, plain and simple. I thought I sounded fine on my Droids, but others said I sounded like shit. Unless you're using headphones to listen and talking directly into the mic, you can't say definitively that the mic is shit on this phone because there are too many other factors to take into account.

That said, I've NEVER heard a cell phone that had a 'great' mic, other than my old work Blackberry. Why? Because Blackberrys are made for communication and business.... our phones are made for people to surf the web and tweet and whatever shit kids do these days.

I think any more making a phone calls is like a last important thing on these phones.
Text, tango, voxer etc so out doesn't bother me.

Ditto. I rarely use my phone as a phone and I think manufacturers count on that. They make things prettier and faster, but neither matters for call quality, so it's clear to me what they make most important.

Sorry folks at possible cost of being minority that does care about call quality, I have to say call quality is important especially if one takes work related calls on the cell. That category would define a lot of us. Then again with about half of this phones owners questioning call quality, it must have some importance to them.
I love the rest, the Swype the emails the multimedia. But if it ain't making calls right, I can understand Apple and blackberry fan club not having to settle for poor call quality. Just imho.
Thanks. :)

And this is not low end hardware on fly by night cellular. This is near the best hardware on the the most expensive carrier, VZW.

If its a big deal to you, return it for another phone or get a replacement.
All I was stating is people don't buy these 1.5 GHZ phones to make phone calls they buy them cause they are like a small computer.

Sorry if I came across as a bigger phone snob than I really am. Was just trying to replicate my SGS 2 Experience on ATT here at Verizon. I'd like to share a somewhat funny co-instance - as I wasnt too sure of the sound here on Spectrum VS920 I was using my HTC Rezound - which had heating problems - so It got sent back to the big red under warranty :) they sent me another VS920 stating they are out of Rezound for the time being - I guess, the phone likes me a lot - as they keep coming :) and I have to give in.

Have a good long weekend - Good Night.
That Rezound has serious overheating problems - Where as the VS920 runs nice and cold.

fin and big.. you guys have defective phones. get a new one. Problem solved. Why keep something thats not working properly. obviously this thread is proving that this is not something that is happening with all spectrums.

No way I would keep a phone that has any issues. thats what the warranty is for.

Dont mean to be rude but obviously you're wrong. My husband and i both have these phones and no one can hear us on them. fin and big are not the only ones reporting this problem. google it. i agree that we should get new phones, but just because youre not having this particular problem, dont treat others that are as if we are stupid. consider yourself lucky that your phone isnt defective. i understand that not all of them are doing this but it seems the problem is more widespread than just a couple "lemon" phones

It sucks... Seems like the build quality of the spectrum is real spotty. I personally love mine and have no issues, but it sucks that so many are. Its stuff like this that will give a company a bad rep and kill support for a what should be and can (and is for some) a spectacular device.

I wasnt treating anyone as if they are stupid. I Was just stating what they should do, and as I would do myself.

I don't care how widespread the problem is, the fact that it's not all phones, proves it's a defect (as you yourself stated) therefore i would keep returning until I got one that functioned properly.

Also I don't recall saying it was only a few phones. Obviously it's a lot of people having issues with it but it's still not most.

Not getting into that discussion above, but wanted to note, this is my third spectrum, had this issue on all of them. With and without a silicon case. I just chalk it up to Mic placement and how I "hold my phone" I guess I am just "doing it wrong..." I'd ask Steve, but I doubt I'll get an answer.

damn right, its all YOUR fault.... lmao JFWY.

I had my mom tell me I sounded like I was whispering the other day when talking to her. Also I made a video of a small lizard on my porch and posted it on to facebook and when I played it back, it literally sounded like I was whispering, and not just low volume, but the mid-range in the audio was gone so it was very

You could have a defective unit... it happens. I had a bad mic on my first OG Droid and had to get a new unit.

I've been testing with holding my phone different ways while talking to people while not using speaker phone and people never complain. So I don't think it's the way you hold the phone unless you somehow have it in your mouth. But I doubt that.

I wonder if anyone with ICS can say if that made a difference?
Does anyone know if there's an app to increase the mic gain.

random voice quality is sort of inherent with wireless communication. even hard land lines had issues! i say let us blame the prying eyes for making us all have to go thru black boxes and their extra hops do do such. (scapegoat found w00t) lol

if the mic is truly at fault one must do testing: take video in a variety of scenarios, take audio recordings in those same areas, and perhaps phone call as well (while you're at it, why not get a call recorder from the android market? ;)) each doesn't need to be lengthy, 1 minute is more than often suffice. compare them on a platform you're used to and can hear the audio fidelity clearly.

calling is a secondary function to modern devices... i doubt the microphone technology has changed in a major way in years. minus the noise canceling, which is not hardware, but software of sorts.

the youtube video posted may sound muffled, but i hear it clearly. loudness is a sensitivity issue / setting, not a hardware inadequacy. unless these people having issues with loudness are on land lines tell the person on the other end to turn their ear piece speaker up. now there's an idea for an app... having preset speaker volume per contact... anyways the muffled / under water call quality is often remedied with 15 seconds of 'let me call you right back' that fixes it 99% of the time i've ever had an issue.

Since I started this post I am more conscious of where my mouth is in relation to the mic.

One of the issues is the phone is a big phone and depending on the angle/ slant/ how you hold it - can be farther away from the mouth - so I try and orient it closer. That has helped in a major way.

Also things like tucking the phone between your cheek and shoulder - something a lot of us do without thinking does not work for clarity specifically on my / this phone.

l Prefer holding a Phone away from MY face So it does not get face sweat on it .
when I do, people Complain about it Sounding muffled. if I hold the microphone near my mouth and the speaker away from my head, they tell me that it sounds better, but I cannot hear as well. SO I have to press the phone against my face

I just upgraded to a Spectrum from a Revolution yesterday, but my son has had a Spectrum for a few months now. I can definitely say that the call quality (to the ear of the person you are talking to) is not as good as it is with practically any other phone.

New to smartphones, and both got LG Spectrum 920 a month ago...MANY problems with call quality instantly going bad when sitting perfectly still in good 4G service area, especially between Spectrums. Heading to Verizon now to prod for their help...understanding is that while under warranty they will replace only with factory refurbished unit and not out of the box new ones. If that is true, makes me suspect that I'm getting a phone that had a similar problem. Otherwise loving this phone.

I've found holding the mic closer to mouth works, Bluetooth works, and few days I had the galaxy nexus I didn't have these call quality issue, but note that galaxy nexus would only get 3g where spectrum gets 4g,, as I use hot spot for my laptop that was a major speed drop. so I went Back to spectrum.
