Does Maps Navigation Take Traffic Into Account?

I have read that Google Maps Navigation takes traffic into account. Does it? I don't see it as an available layer. I don't see green and red zones on the navigation map. Is it using traffic info to plot the shortest route? How often is it updating? Why don't I see red zones when I am sitting in stop and go traffic? Am I using an older version? Thanks
