Does "rooting" accomplish this?

I got my 6yr old son a Nabi 2 tablet last Xmas. He loves it and it has been a good tablet for our needs. He uses it primarily in the kid mode while I am able to use it in "parent" mode as a Android 4.0 (ICS) tablet. All has been good.

Lately, I have been thinking of rooting it. I know it can be done & one main reason is to get the Google Play store on it (although, Amazon and Aptoide have served me pretty well), but wondering if rooting will accomplish these two features that I am highly interested in too:

  • enable FULL HDMI output support to an HDTV for apps like Xfinity Play and Showtime Anytime
  • Allow apps to be installed or moved to its external micro-SD card

Any other big benefits of rooting? Just wondering

Rooting would be able to allow apps to be moved to its sd card. However, for full hdmi output, I am not so sure. By rooting, you can also get rid of unwanted bloatwares and the most powerful feature is to flash custom roms. :D

My son uses it during the day and then I like to "play" with it at night :-) I actually just realized and remembered that I have an older LG Verizon phone with an HDMI output. Maybe I'll try to root that instead and see how it performs with the mentioned apps on a HDTV.

i am not sure the Nabi has any provisions for HDMI output, which would be required (either through a dongle or a mini-HDMI port) and cannot just be magically done via root.

He is using his old LG phone to connect to the HDMI output.

Actually, it does have a micro-HDMI output. I use it with the HBO GO app (since they now allow video output) & connect it to my HDTV. It works well. Since this Nabi 2 tablet is not rooted yet, this HDMI output won't work with the Showtime and Xfinity apps though.

I was just thinking of rooting my LG phone in order to connect the HDMI output (for Showtime and Xfinity), but haven't done it yet.

Actually, another big reason I would like to possibly root this tablet is because of being able to install or move apps to its external micro-SD storage area. Its currently an 8GB tablet and we have sort of hit that limit. I am now having to delete stuff in order to put more on it for my son.

I would like to simply move or initially install some stuff to its micro-SD slot (currently with an 8GB microSD card) if able to. Right now, I'm simply using this microSD slot to put some media on (video and mp3 tracks)

By rooting, you should be able to move apps to the micro SD card if you want to. :)
