does speakerphone have its own mic?

on my old phone when i talk people cant hear me but if i put it on speakerphone they can.....so does that mean my mic is broke? or does speakerphone have a seperate mic which is working?

Normally phone has just one MIC, which is used during normal call and also speakerphone. Maybe it's some software problem or MIC is muted?
Of course there are some phones (Google N1) which have 2 mics, but second is used for improving speech quality (filtering external noise).
