Help Does the back button no longer get out of apps?

On the new nexus 7, my habit of just hitting the "back" button (the curly arrow on the left) to get all the way out of an app no longer seems to work. Is this a 4.3 change? Will I have to train myself to use Home instead now?

Update: I've decided this really only happened after getting a batch of updates from Play store. I couldn't get out of Play store with back button. But I haven't had the problem again with other apps (or even with play store when I have no updates to install).

I had a similar thing happen. As you said once I couldn't get out of Play. Then I went through a period of time where when I backed completely out of an app, I'd get dumped into the recent apps screen. For some unknown reason, both problems seem to have sorted themselves. I had no hand in that stopping.
