Does the N7 have a micro sd slot?

No slot, no sale. Clouds are for rain and shade.

Update:

Apparently does not. This is the quickest favorite forum delete from Phandroid app to date.

Good luck with that there cloud if away from wifi.

Yep and I am done. My best retaliation for such consumer unfriendly/agenda based decisions is to not buy it.

Would have bought two. My guess is up to a 20% impact on sales. This issue was the number one reason for Amazon Fire returns. No slot and this is per Amazon employees.

Go on Google, operate in your recalcitrant bubble.

My other tablet, HP Touchpad doesn't have one either, but it is 32 gb. My wife has the 16 gb version and hasn't been an issue.

Mine is 64gb, so point is there are options.

I am anti Nexus now, since the brand equals oppression of us local data loving folks.

People that buy Nexus products are part of the Borg collective. You have been assimilated into the cloouuuuud!

Also, Google is not Apple, so why mimic them? Not having a slot will result in constrained sales, but they must have some angle in the cloud services such as data mining and storage charges.....

OK, slightly harsh but I don't entirely disagree. I think it's foolish to have not slot either. Annoys the hell out of me with my GNex. It's not a deal-breaker for me though. I see it as a high powered tablet with a form factor which will work well for me.

To each their own.

Remember the iPad does not have expandable memory and that sure has not hurt their sales.

The iPad also has a 32gb and 64gb option. Even with no sd slot this would have been the perfect tablet for me at 32gb, but 16gb is too small. Hell my Galaxy Nexus came with 32gb.

Kindle Fire is a poor comparison as it has 6 GB to begin with of which a little less than 5.5 gb is available to the user. So it has the dual edge sword of having no expansion and being smaller than normal to begin with. For $250, you can get a 16 gb which is probably plenty for most people I would think.

8gb and 16gb have several problems on their own:

About a 1gb is lost to formatting

The OS and update allocation takes at least 1gb

As you install apps, the data and space is displaced, so less for media

Android likes having about 500mb free for data, so need some breathing room to avoid issues

Net result is probably 5gb free for the 8 and 13gb for the 16 for apps and media. Cloud corralling.

I can buy two 16gb N7s for the price of one 16gb ipad and for less than 32gb ipad. Boom

No slot is not a deal breaker for me at all - just wish it was 16GB.

BUT do remember that ICS/JB do support USB OTG so just buy a OTG cable from eBay and you can plug huge flash drives into it for media consumption. I can plug my 64GB flash drive in my Galaxy Nexus and have a TON more storage.

Yeah, I'm really disappointed to hear this, and yes, it's probably a deal-breaker for me. For a wi-fi only device aimed at media consumption, no card slot is just effing dumb. This would have been the *perfect* 7" sweet-spot tablet.

I've got some coupons for Staples, and could get a Galaxy Tab 2 for about $150... I may just go that route. Have to check out the screen and see if I can live with it. :-(

I just opened up my phone. I've got a 32 GB SD card. I never stream anything. I listen to podcasts and music, all of which is stored locally on my phone. I also read books on my Kindle app. Of my 32 GB card, the phone reports 29.71 gb free. 21.57 GB is available. I could have everything I wanted on a 16 GB tablet in my case and have room to spare. I could probably dial stuff back and put it on 8 gb if I had to.

I get the irritation but this is a good thing for "none techy" people which is the target for these devices. Lets face it.... the tech savy world isn't where the money is and it never will be.

I don't know how many times (in fact I just had this convo 2 days ago) with someone that had no idea if their data/music/whatever is stored on the SD or internal. It seems like a dumb question but its usually people that have to do a reset or are trying to get their info to a new phone and treat the SD card like SIM card(Contacts). Add that to slower response times for getting information and some cards not working with certain units and it can quickly become a nightmare for end users.

Now they have one place for everything, with all of their stuff backed up somewhere..... Heck I bought the 8 gig version because that's all I can afford and I know I will be in wifi area 98% of the time and the rest of the time I have my phone....

This device isn't for everyone but I think its a great starter price point and it gets people in the door and hopefully wanting more!

I already own a Tab 7.7, plus a 64gb micro sd card. Love it, love the form factor.

The N7 is excellent tablet for the price, they'll sell an absolute cartload. Jealous of vanilla android and timely updates. Serious downers are wifi only and no microsd, the latter I personally couldn't live without.

Maximum 16gb and no micro SD slot? Ouch.

People say cloud cloud cloud, to which I say no no no! Mobile networks aren't up to the task going through tunnels, and lots of places are immune to steady stable phone signals. I’m from the UK and travel a lot, use 3, have unlimited data and their HSPA+ is very good ime. Good luck streaming high bitrate video though. Anything less than a 720p mkv is a travesty these days, especially on a gorgeous samoled+ display, same applies to the quality IPS display of the Nexus 7.

That's not to put it down, it's a fantastic tablet for the price, it's just not targeted at me. I'm delighted they're releasing it, it'll bring lots of people to android tablets, meaning better tablet apps and probably a fair few targeted at the form factor. Bravo Google.

Come-on ... honestly. 6gb is enough as long as you have a desktop computer to store movies.... and with all the free cloud services. Face it the cloud is the future standard

6gb is enough

In your usage case, fantastic, you're fine with small local storage. For innumerable others , 6gb is a laughably small amount.

Realistically, 6gb would mean I had to restrict myself to 3 x 1.09gb mkvs, one or two graphic heavy games...and very little else. I shudder at the thought.

Again, the thought of watching low bitrate, low res video when the alternative is high quality, high bitrate video, there really is no contest.

Cloud is great for small files and data - I use it across a number of devices, I'd hate to be without it now, and I get great unlimited HSPA+ coverage with 3 here in the UK - but is the enemy of high quality media files, be it music or video.

I'm highly impressed with the N7. As a very satisfied Tab 7.7 owner (that cost twice the price -

Yeppers. I like having my game roms, comics and videos local storage. All depends on your usage. You know that either Google operates in a bubble, or they know sales will be constrained due to lack of an sd card slot.

This makes sense to some degree, since if they are breaking even or even losing money selling these, WHY would they want local content users buying them? Of course, you would hope they would consider that even us local storage fans buy apps (I buy way too many- it is a condition I have- iTunes as well).

Nope, the Nexus 7 is cloud and proud and as stated, a big electronic fence to corrall users into using... MOOOOOO! ;)

Brian at Anandtech will update sometime this weekend (I hope), so maybe we will know if usb storage will work and not need a power source. Then we can hope Google does not kill the feature in an update (if works by accident) ;)

Hope I am joking.

That's the beauty of lots of storage, I keep my 64gb micro sd card (which are reasonably priced these days) choc full of video and comics etc, giving me lots of choice of what to watch or read, and only have to load it up with new stuff every couple of weeks. I would have bought the Galaxy Nexus but for the paltry 16gb/no micro sd card. I doubt the next Nexus will have a sd slot, but I'm hoping for at least 32gb, then I might consider it. I like my Galaxy Note, but ideally I want vanilla android next time - gotta envy Nexus owners getting JB the other day, while I only got ICS a month ago, tsk!
