Does the S5 require 4G to work optimally?

Hi there. I'm trying to find a tariff for a Galaxy S5 I've just bought. When speaking to one phone provider, I told them I'm not bothered about 4G, but the advisor said that the "S5 requires 4G" to work to its potential. Is that true? Do I need to have 4G with the phone for it to work as it should?
Thank you.

4G is certainly faster for data transfer speeds but it is not the be all and end all. I am not in an 4G/LTE area and have been using the S5 without any problems. Albeit, I use Wi-Fi at home and work which negates the need for 4G. Most data plans these days, include 4G services.

I thought as much. EE trying to sell. Thank you!

here in the rural sticks where I live, 4g is more promise than truth.... 3g is there "most of the time", and 1x shows up more than I would like.

None of this has any effect on how the S5 performs, except for how fast it can access the internet.
anything else a Customer Service/Sales rep blows smoke at you is pure Advertising Scheming.

Buy the S5, enjoy all of the neat things it can do.... then when you finally get close to wideband, let it go as fast as it can....
