Help Download Music - HTC Wilfire - How to?

Sorry for this absolute idiot question but I am at a loss as to how to get music onto my HTC Wildfire. I can download single one-off songs from the 3 network no problem. But people in my work talk about downloading music free, from various sites etc. I have no clue how to do this. When I plug the usb cable in to my laptop it says cannot locate HTC Sync. That apart I still haven't got a clue what to do. Is there a step by step guide anywhere? As you will have gathered I'm clueless. Thanks in advance.
 
1) Try going to the Market, search for "mp3", then you will get a selection of nice little apps to install. Open the app, Install and search until your heart is content........... That is one way.

2) You do not need to sync, select "hard drive" instead just after plugging your phone in to your laptop and look for the SD card installed in your phone. You can stick music anywhere and the phone player will find it. Alternatively store it in a folder you name "music and songs" for example.

3) You can work 1 and 2 together to search and store all your music for free. I must say I dont do this as it is illegal :eek:
 
Hi dog chops when i click into the market and try to connect i keep getting an error " Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server. This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services"

Any ideas please, thanks again x
 
connect your phone via usb, and select disc drive. this is your sd card, then simply copy music onto card, no need to put in folders, and any mp3 player app you have will recognise music and load it.:p
htc sync is a horrible piece of software and all i have loaded it for was for drivers to root phone.;)
 
Thank you peeps I have just brought this phone and needed a lil help found this website and found here, very helpful indeed I'm sure I will be back for more help lol ttfn folks :)
