Download to external SD card is not posible anymore

It is suddenly not possible on my mini S4 GT-19195 Android 4.4.2 to download to the external SD card. Download to the internal memory is still possible. I get the message by downloading to the ext, SD-card:
Your system forbids ES (that is my ES file explorer) from writing on external SD card (check https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=67570), so ES can only write on it after rooted
I opened the link and did not found a solution, but only more complaints of users.
Is there a solution to unlock the SD card without rooting? What is going on?

Not as far as I'm aware, root is your only option.

Fwiw, I believe they removed the restriction in Lollipop based on user feedback.

According to GSMarena, it only ever officially made it to 4.4.2, sorry.
